camphor a

(kam-fo'rah) [L.] (U. S. and Br.) Camphor, " the dextrogyrate modification of the saturated ketone obtained from Cinnamomum camphor a and purified by sublimation"; occurs in tough, translucent, crystalline ma es, evaporating slowly on exposure to the air, very slightly soluble in water, but freely so in alcohol, ether, chloroform, and oils. Stimulant, carminative, expectorant, and diaphoretic in doses of gr. ^-3 (0.03-0.2). c. monobroma'ta (U. S.), mono bromated camphor, occurs in colorle or white needles and prisms or in glo y scales having a faint odor of camphor; antispasmodic, soporific, and cardiac sedative, in doses of gr. 1-3 (0.06-0.2).
