VICTORIA

The name given to one of the small planets between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It was discovered by Mr. Hind, at Mr. Bishop's observatory, in the Regent's Park, on the evening of the 13th of September, 1850, in the constellation Pegasus, and is the twelfth of the group in the order of discovery. Its brightne is somewhat greater than that of some of the others, being equal to that of stars of the eighth magnitude. Mr. Hind selected as the symbol of the new planet a star and laurel leaf, emblematical of the Godde of Victory. ( Monthly Notices of the lioyal Astronomical Society, vol. xi.) See Planet.
