Landgrave

(land'grāv.) [Ger. landgraf, land-count.] A title a umed by some German counts, in the 12th century, to distinguish them from the counts under their jurisdiction. The title was afterwards given to persons intrusted by the emperor with the civil adminIstration of a province, many of whom subsequently a erted their independence, and became the sovereigns | of the countries over which they had ruled as governors or viceroys; as, the land graves of Thu ring i a and He e.
