PACE

( Fr. pas.) A denomination of linear measure, or uncertain extent; a«8umed by some to be 5 feet, by PADISHA. others 4-4. It is the quantity supposed to be measured by the foot from the place where it is taken up to that where it is set down. The ancient Roman pace, considered as the thousandth part of a mile, was five Roman feet, and each foot contained between 1160 and 11-64 modern English inches; hence the pace was about.58-1 English inches, and the Roman mile, the mille pa us, equal to 1614 yards.
