ACETABULUM

(Lat. a little cup, or dish.) A ferm applied to the suckers on the arms of the cuttlefish, and other dibranchiate cephalopods, which have been, hence, recently termed ace tabu lifer a. These suckers were called by Aristotle kotuloi, which Taylor has erroneously rendered 'joints,' in the English translation of the History of Animals. In anatomy, acetabulum signifies the cavity of the hip-joint. In entomology it is the socket on the trunk in which the leg is planted. [s. 22]
