CARBOLIC ACID

A substance obtained by the distillation of coal tar: it crystallises in prismatic needles, which fuse at 95° and boil at 270°: it has a penetrating odour and burning taste, and in many respects resembles kreasote: its specific gravity is 1-06. It appears to be identical with the substance called hydrate of Phertyle. Its formula is Cjj H5 O, HO. [s. 1372]
