PALUDINA

(Lat. pal us, a marsh.) A genus of fresh-water or marsh snails; so called from their location in marshes, ditches, and slow streams. Many species are common in Great Britain; a beautiful example, called the agate marsh-shell {Paludina a chat in a. Lam.), may be found in the smaller tributaries of the Thames. [s. 889]
