EDWARD SETTLE (1843), an American soldier; 6. in Kalida, Ohio. Without finishing his education he enlisted as a private in the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War, but afterwards entered the West Point Military Academy and graduated in 1867. He served through the Indian wars in the West and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, retiring in 1907 with the rank of brigadier-general. An article which he wrote in the Century Magazine, General Custer’s Last Battle, is one of the most valuable personal records of Custer’s death.
