Franco is Marie Charles, a French social economist; born in Besancon, France, April 7, 1772. At first in trade, then in the army, the seeing a cargo of rice thrown into the sea to raise its price led him to attempt a reform abolishing the competitive system, by means of a ociated production and life in “ phalansteries.” He died in Paris, Oct. 8, 1837.
