This is said either when of two lobes of a stigma, one, the anterior, is directed towards the front of a flower, and the other, the posterior, towards the back, or in any other similar case. It is also applied to certain stipules, which stand between the petiole and stem of a plant, adhering to the former, as in some Cinchonaceous plants. [s. 71]
