It occurs in three forms, amorphous, graphite, and the diamond, and is found in all animal and vegetable products; combined with hy drogen it forms a large number of compounds. It is used for a variety of purposes, as fuel, as a reducing agent in metallurgical proce es, as a gem, etc. The carbon atoms po e in a remarkable degree the power of uniting with each other and forming thus nuclei around which organic compounds are built.
