CARBON

(Lat. carbo.) This term is used in chemistry to signify the pure combustible base of the varieties of charcoal and other carbonaceous matters; Ihe diamond is pure carbon in a crystalline form. Carbon is an elementary substance, which combines with oxygen in twe proportions, forming carbonic acid and carbonic oxide. [s. 210]
