TANISTRY

An ancient Irish custom of descent, defined as " descent from the oldest and worthiest of the blood." (See Sir J. Davies's Cases before the Irish Judges, 1762.) Some have derived it from thane or thegn; but this seems to be a word of Teutonic origin. (See also Quart. Rev. vol. Ivi. p. 223.) [s. 1220]
