Tanistry

(tan'ist-re.) [From Ir. tan, a territory.] (Ir. Hist.) An old tenure of lands in Ireland, ., by which the proprietor had only a life-estate, and the inheritance descended to the oldest or most worthy of the blood and name of the deceased; but the practice often gave rise to the fiercest and most sanguinary contests between tribes and families.
