An ancient Irish custom of descent, defined as "descent from the oldest and worthiest of the blood." (See Sir J. Davies's Cases before the Irish Judges, 1762.) Some have derived it from thane or thegn; but this seems to be a word of Teutonic origin. (See also Quart. Rev., vol. lvi., p. 223.) [s. 1229]
