Thomas, an English youth whose genius, eccentricity, and melancholy fate have gained him much celebrity; born in Bristol in 1752, of poor parents. He died of self-administered poison in 1770, when not yet 18 years old. His works were more extensively read as the public became acquainted with the history of his misfortunes. The most remarkable are the poems published under the name of “Rowley,’’ which he composed at the age of 15 years.
