TALES

In Law. If by rea-on of challenges or other causes a sufficient number of jurors do not appear at a trial, either party may pray a tales; that is, may pray the sheriff (since 6 G. 4, c. 50, the judge at the trial) to allow a sufficient number of qualified men who happen to be present (tales cir cums tanti bus) to be joined with the other juror3 to nnke up the twelve. In practice this seldom arises, ex cept in the case of special jury trials, When the talesmen are taken from the common jury panel in the same court. See Jury. [s. 1228]
