A gas composed of Carbon 1 atom - 6 Oxygen 1 - - 8 14 42-8 57-2 100-0 1 00 cubical inches weigh 30*2 grains. It is fatal to animals, and extinguishes flame; but it burns in contact with air, and forms carbonic acid. It is obtained by pa ing carbonic acid over red-hot charcoal, or by heating a O 2 ' [s. 208]
