One who directs or leads the people in political mailers.: In its original acceptation it was considered as a most honourable designation, having been applied to Solon, Demosthenes,and in fact to many of the most illustrious characters of antiquity; but it is now almost invariably used in a bad sense. The oldest and most satirical of all portraits of the demagogue is traced by Aris toph anes in his play of the Knights, in the character of Cleon. [s. 340]
