Trade

(trad.) The busine of buying and selling, comprehending every species of exchange or dealing. It is, however, chiefly used to denote the barter or purchase and sale of goods, wares, and merchandise, either by wholesale or retail. Foreign T. consists in the exportation and importation of goods, or the exchange of the commodities of the different countries. Inland or home T. is the exchange or buying and selling of goods within a country. The word trade has also a more limited signification, designating the busine which a person has learned, and which he either carries on or is employed in; as the T. of a carpenter, a smith, . The liberal arts, learned profe ions, and agriculture, are not included. [s. 903]
