In 1887 the Merchandise Mark Act was pa ed, and further developed by Acts in 1891 and 1894. They were intended to protect home-made goods from cheap imitations, and since the German Emperor sent his foolish telegram to President Kruger they have further been a means of identifying—for rejection—German goods.
