(gas-tri’ -tis) [yaarr/p, stomach; trig, inflammation]. Inflammation of the stomach. It may be acute or chronic; catarrhal, suppurative or phlegmonous, or diphtheric. G., Atrophic, a chronic form with atrophy of the mucous membrane. G., Hypertrophic, the early stage of chronic gastritis in which there is a hyperplasia of the mucous membrane. G. polyposa, a form of chronic gastritis characterized by a great overgrowth of the connective ti ue of the organ, giving rise to polypoid projections of fibrous ti ue covered by epithelium. 292
