—An optical instrument which magnifies the appearance of distant objects, causing them apparently to come nearer. It consists e entially of a tube containing the objective, a large converging lens or concave mirror (speculum) and a small lens or combination of lenses. The first forms an optical image of the object observed, and the latter magnifies the image.
