Humphrey John, compr., orgt. b. London, Eng May 22, 1856. Boy chorister, and church oiganist at the age of 11; education carried on under private teachers, during which time he served as organist of several English churches; came to the United States m 1886, locatmg at San Francisco, where he was organist of several churches; for several years organist of Trinity Church, Boston, from which city he returned to San Francisco, where he now (1910) resides; organist of St. Dominic’s church, and of two Jewish synagogues, condr. Handel and Haydn Society. Compositions include three comic operas, Bluff King Hat (1889), His Majesty (1S90) and The Conspirators (1900); The Nartimty oratorio (1888); Ma in D minor (1907); music drama Monte zum a (1903) produced as a forest play by the Bohemian Club of San Francisco; orchestral suite, Scenes m California (1906); incidental music to many plays, songs, piano and violin pieces, part-songs and church music; won the gold medal for composition A. G. O., 1900, Kimball Prize of the Chicago Madrigal Club (1907); Mus. Doc. University of the Pacific; music critic San Francisco Examiner and Even ring Post
