Attorney

(at-tür'ne.) [Mod. L. attorn at us, a person set in place of another.] (Law.) One who is appointed by another to do a thing in his absence. An Attorney-inLaw is one who acts in the courts of law, according to rules which differ not only in the several States,but frequently in the different courts of the same State. The Attorney-General of the U. States is an officer appointed by the President, whose duties are to prosecute and conduct all suits in the Supreme Court in which the U. States shall be concerned, and give his advice upon questions of law when required by the President. [s. 59]
