QUIT RENT

a corruption of the old Anglo-Saxon, Awit-rent, or white rent, se called because paid in silver. It was an annual charge paid by a tenant to the lord of the manor in licu of certain services which otherwise he bad to render, such as ploughing his lord’s ficlds. etc. [s. 253]
