Garrote

Garotte, (gah-rōt'.) [Sp. ga rote, a stake.] In Spain, the name given to a mode of capital punishment whereby criminals are strangulated by the tightening of an iron collar fixed round the neck, while seated on a stool in front of a wooden stake or post. [s. 396]
