heeling-error

(hé/ling-er’or), n. A deviation of the compa -needle on board ship from the magnetic pole, caused by induced magnetism in the transverse iron beams of the ship. This induction is due to the inclination of the beams in the direction of the magnetic pole when the ship heels, or inclines to one side or the other.
