In Ecclesiastical History, a name popularly given to crusaders returned from the holy war, or pilgrims from Palestine, from the branch of palm-tree which they were wont to carry with them as a staff in commemoration of their journey. PALMIPEDS, Palmipedes. (Lat. palm a, o palm, and pes, a foot.) The name given by Cuvier and Temminck to an order of birds corresponding to the Ansercs of Linnteus, and the Nat a to res, or swimming-birds, of Illiger. [s. 895]
