In Ecclesiastical History, a name popularly given to crusaders returned from the holy war, or pilgrims from Palestine, from the branch of palm-tree which they were wont to carry with them as a staff in commemoration of their journey. PALMIPEDS, Palmipedes. (Lat. palm a, a palm, and pes, afoot.) The name given by Cuvier and Temminck to an order of birds corresponding to the Anseres of Linnaeus, and the Nat a to res, or swimming-birds, of Uliger. [s. 889]
