Gregory

Patriarch of Constantinople; born in 1730. He studied at Mount Athos; lived as a hermit; was made archbishop at Smyrna, and, in 1795, Patriarch of Constantinople. In 1821, when the Greek insurrection broke out in the Morea, his native country, he became an object of sus to the Porte, and when, shorty after, he allowed the family of Prince Morousi to escape from his guardianship, he was seized as he left the church on the first oa of the Easter festival and hanged in his robes of office before the church gate Gregory I., surnamed the Great, a Pope; born in Rome, about 544. He showed such abilities as a senator that the Emperor Just in us appointed him prefect of Rome, after which he embraced the monastic life in a society founded by himself. He was elected succe or to Pelagius II. in 590.
