[HYACINTH.] Hỹ-ădş, Hy-a-dēş, s. pl . [Lat. hyades ; Greek Hyades , probably from hys =a sow, or hyō =to wet, to water, to rain.] Astron.: According to the cla ic writers, seven stars (only five of which are now clearly discernible) in the head of the Bull, Taurus. One is Aldebaran (q.v.). When the Hyades rose with the sun, the Greek and Romans expected rain. "Thro' scudding drift the rainy Hyades Vext the dim sea."
