Commi ioned officer who commands a troop of cavalry, a company of infantry, or a battery of artillery; next in rank below a major and senior to a first-lieutenant. In the U. S. Army he is held responsible for the camp and garrison equipage, the arms, ammunition and clothing of his company. In the navy, commander of a ve el, ranking below a commodore.
