(Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) This term is generally applied to instruments for facilitating the analysis of atmospheric air, or rather for determining the quantity of oxygen contained in a given volume of air; under the idea that tlie salubrity of air depended upon its relative quantity of oxygen. We now know, however, that this is not the ciise, and that the relation of the oxygen to the nitrogen in the atmosphere is not subject to any discernible fluctuation. [s. 435]
