CALUMET

(Lat. calamus, a reed.) In Modem History,a large beautifully adorned pipe, used by the North American Indians as the emblem of peace. (.Harris'* Voyages, vol. ii. p. 908.) The first notice of the calumet among European writers is to be found in Ferdinand de Soto's account of his expedition through the southern provinces in1470. See Catlin's North American Indians.
