CALUMET

(Lat. calamus, a reed.) In Modem History, a large beautifully adorned pipe, used by the North American Indians as the emblem of peace, {Harris's Voyages, vol. ii. p. 908.) The first notice of the calumet among European writers is to be found in Ferdinand de Soto's account of his expedition through the southern provinces in 1470. [s. 195]
