Neo-Platonism

(-plat'o-nizm.) [From Gr. neos, and Platon, Plato.] (Philos.) The tenets held by a school of philosophical mystics which arose during the 4th and 5th cents. of the Christian æra. They were disciples of Plot in us and Ammonius Saccas, and in their system combined old Plutonic theories with an infusion of Eastern demonological tradition. By some, the term is considered more properly applicable to the doctrines advanced by the Eclectic Platonists, a school founded by Philo and Antiochus. [s. 637]
