(sternum) [L.; Gr. orépvor]. The breastbone; the narrow, flat bone in the median line of the thorax in front. It consists of three portions, distinguished as the manubrium, the gladiolus, and the ensiform or xiphoid appendix. cleft 8., congenital fi ure of the sternum.
