Five

women of a hamlet, in a remote glen, were pa ing a sick child through the fire. Two held a blazing hoop, two others pa ed the child backwards and forwards through it. The mother looked on a little distance away, and when her child was restored to her, the hoop was thrown into a pool hard by. The child was 18 months old, and a weakling, supposed to have been affected by the evil eye. A bunch of bog myrtle was then placed over its bed by an old woman, who directed that it should not be removed till the next new moon.
