Bologna

(-lō'nah,) a famous city of Italy, finely situated in ap lain N. of the A pennines, 24 m. S.E. of Modena, and27 S.W. of Ferrara; Lat. 44° 29' 54" N., Lon. 11° 21′ E. It po e es magnificent public edifices, and isone of the great centres of public instruction in Italy, and its university, founded by the emperor Theodosius, A. D. 425, is one of the most ancient in Europe. It has produced a great number of men distinguished in science and the arts; and has given its name to a school of painting chiefly represented by Primatic cio, the Caracci, Guido, and Guercino.
