Ethylene

(eth'-il-en) dijp, ether; matter, defiant gas, A colorle , poisonous gas having an unpleasant, suffocating smell. It burns with a bright luminous flame, and when mixed with air explodes violently. It is one of the constituents of illuminating gas, and has strong affinities, especially for chlorin, with which it unites to form an oily compound. E. Blue. See Pigments, Conspectus of. E.
