ALOE

(Arabic, alloch.) A small tree with endogenous stems, and stiff, fleshy, hard pointed leaves, abound ing in a purgative principle which is obtained by simple pre ure of the bruised leaves, or by boding. The juice when inspi ated becomes the medicinal drug of the shops. It varies much in quality. (.See the following article.) [s. 48]
