GASTRITIS

Inflammation of the stomach. It is attended by great irritability of the stomach, indicated by hie cup, vomiting, and much pain and general uneasine : the pulse is small and hard, and there is fever, attended by prostration of strength. It is a very dangerous disease, and requires prompt treatment; especially bleeding, general and local; blisters; hot bath, or fomentation. The constant sickne generally prevents the exhibition of any of the ordinary remedies. When it arises from poison, the stomach pump and other distinct treatment is often requisite. GASTROCHjENA. (Yunanca köken — orijinale bakınız.) A genus of Bivalve Mollusks, in which a large hiatus or gape intervenes between the closed valves on the ventral aspect of the animal. The mantle is perforated, opposite to this gape, by a small aperture for the pa age of the foot; and is prolonged posteriorly into two muscular tubes or siphons. The Gast roch enes inhabit burrows, winch they perforate in the substance of madrepores or calcareous rocks, and the line their perforations with a calcareous tube. [s. 504]
